HAWK, COYOTE, AND OWL
For Arthur Hawkes and Peter Coyote

As electrons
We are all one.

Youth and friendship
Mysterious and intense
We lived our illusions with gusto
You hawking the skies with wing pointed
Arrow rays… voice a diving scream
We lived as brothers
Played as brothers
Smoked crime and ran red lights in Boston

The trickster coyote caught me off guard
His identity hidden, but vaguely seen in fairy-tale smoke
During long journeys across the land…
Across Pacific waters into tropical bathrooms
Peeing behind mangos and bamboo walls
Zigzagging in a portable home over brown and green globes
I landed briefly in your San Francisco den
Den of artists and hippies, mimes, the wild cards of fate
Strewn over a rainbow pile of angel “here and now’s”

The owl, a creature gliding between the living and dead
The place between walls
swinging door of muse torn dreams
I am he who shadows
I am the taloned night hawk
I am the coyote’s game

We are all one as electrons
We are the act in the play
Plethora of scenes relentlessly shifting and re-defining who we are

Old age creeping wisdom has taught me
Our souls are forced actors in the same play

This time
This life
We work out mutual destinies
We work out our Big assignments.

The Owl hails you
Hawk and Coyote
We burn our histories in flesh
Our minds bank memories as shimmering gold
The electric circuits are in town
…even after the plug has been pulled.
